Keeping Children Safe in the Summertime

As the weather begins to warm up and spring begins to turn into summer, most of us take our kids outside more to enjoy the weather together. The unfortunate thing about summertime is that many child-related accidents, some tragic, occur during the spring and summer months. At Kids Formal, we love helping families dress their little ones up in summer girls’ fancy dresses and spring boys’ suits and, as a result, we want to help you keep your children safe during throughout the year. Below are a few tips to help you keep your children safe in the summertime.

1.    Water Safety Must Be Taught. One of the first things most of us think about when the temperatures start to rise is dragging the pool out and getting it ready. It doesn’t matter what age your children are, accidental drowning can occur at all age levels. Therefore, it’s important that you teach your children about proper water safety before getting a family pool. For those with young children – swimming lessons are a must do. Get them enrolled in swimming lessons when they’re toddlers. Some places even offer Mommy and Me classes.

2.     Keep an Eye on the Kids. Even if everyone is outside in the backyard together doing yard work or enjoying a BBQ, it’s important that you keep an eye on where your kids are and what they’re doing. This is especially true for those with young children. In the blink of an eye a tragedy can occur. There have been cases where children have crawled on something too high and have fallen off and banged their heads on the concrete. There have also been incidents where a gate got left open and went undetected, allowing a toddler to walk out and get hit by a car. Those are just a couple of examples of how easy it is for tragedies to occur. Therefore, be sure to keep an eye on your children so you know where they are and what they’re doing at all times.

3.    Yard Work is Not for Young Children. I know it can be tempting to let your 3 year old ride around on the lawn mower with you, but refrain from this. Lawn mowers are extremely dangerous for young children to be around when they’re running and many kids get hurt every year as a result of being around them. If you want to give your kids a ride on the lawn mower do not engage the blade. Also, do not keep the key in the ignition when it’s not in use. Kids are smart and pick up on things quickly – it’s not hard for them to figure out how to start the mower if the key is left in it.
