Memorial
Day Activities
As you know, Memorial Day is only a few short days
from now. Have you made any special plans with your family for the long
weekend? If not, now is the time to get on the ball and start planning. For the
majority of us, Memorial Day weekend is a long, 3-day weekend, which gives us
the perfect opportunity to reconnect with our families. Below are a few ideas
for how you can spend this special time.
Get
Dressed Up and Visit the Graves: Sadly, Memorial Day has
lost it’s true meaning for many and the holiday is used as a time to go bargain
hunting, take a mini-vacation or to do some other form of entertainment. Don’t let this happen
to you. Teach your kids about the meaning of Memorial Day and it is a day set
aside to remember the loved ones we’ve lost in the past.
Make it a special occasion by having all members of
the family dress nicely (girls wear a pretty
dress and boys wear dress pants and a formal
shirt and tie) and take flowers to the graves of your
family’s deceased loved ones. Once you’ve visited the graves and reflected on
the lives these people lived, go out for a remembrance dinner at a formal
restaurant. Spend this time telling stories about some of the people you’ve
lost. This will teach your children what Memorial Day is really about and give
them a tradition they can pass on to their children.
Have
Friends Over for a BBQ: If you and your kids don’t want to
join the thousands hitting the road this Memorial Day and have family and
friends who also want to stay home, why not get together and have a big BBQ in
the backyard? If you’ve got a swimming pool, then the stage is set for a great
day enjoying each other’s company. Even if you don’t, you can plan an evening
BBQ when it cools off and play a variety of outdoor games (volleyball,
horseshoes, water balloon fights, etc.) together, after enjoying all the great food!
Go
to the Beach: If you live close to a beach, or even
within a few hours, spending Memorial Day weekend at the beach is a great way
to unwind and enjoy the holiday with your family. You don’t have to do anything
at the beach except relax. The beach has something for everyone, which will
ensure everyone has a great time.
Go
to the Lake: You may not be close to the ocean, but
you can still have fun in the sun and on the water this Memorial Day weekend by
heading to the nearest lake. You don’t even have to have your own water
equipment as most lakes have jet ski and boat rentals available. However, when
heading to the lake for Memorial Day weekend, make sure you are aware of what
is going on around you at all times. There are many water-related accidents
that happen every year as visiting the lake is a popular hobby for this
particular holiday.
