Tips for Parents Bringing Toddlers to Formal Events

A lot of parents try to find babysitters for their young children when they have to attend formal social functions, but this isn’t always possible. If this has happened to you, or you are in the situation now, you may be tempted just to stay home and miss out on all the fun. The good news is that when you follow the tips below you shouldn’t have any problem attending the formal event with your toddlers in tow (unless it is an adult only event).

#1 – Get Some Sleep. This step requires some planning ahead, but it’s important. If you know you’ll be taking your toddler with you to a formal event in the late afternoon or evening, make sure your toddler takes a nap before you leave. Well-rested toddlers are generally happier and easier to deal with than those who are tired.

#2 – Pack Some Goodies. The second thing all parents with toddlers should do when headed out for a formal event is pack a handbag with some of their kiddo’s favorite goodies inside. For instance, if your little one like crackers, pack some fun animal crackers. You can also bring the candies that they don’t get very often such as twizzlers, M&M’s, etc. as these “special” treats will keep them entertained and happy for quite a while.

#3 – Bring a Few Toys. Next, bring a few new toys for your toddler to the event. Things such as a new truck for a boy and a new doll/Barbie for a girl, coloring books and crayons and books are great for catching their attention. The trick is that these things have to be new…things they haven’t played with before. You may even find breaking out your iPhone and showing an older toddler a game such as Angry Birds (on silent of course) will hold their attention too.
