Tips for Saving on Special-Occasion Clothing for Children

Every year, there are several instances when children need clothing for a special occasion. This is especially true when children get into preschool and grade school. There will be times when they need a new dress or suit for a school program, special church service, wedding, family pictures and a host of other events. While we all love seeing our children dressed up for these events, we generally dread the thought of paying for the special occasion clothing. However, by following the suggestions below, you will probably be able to find a few ways to save money.

1.    Refer to the Guidelines. Most special occasions have specific rules for the attire that should be worn. Therefore, check the clothing guidelines where the occasion is to be held (or with the host of the event) so you are clear on how formal the clothing your children wear should be. You may find that you would have overdressed your little one if you hadn’t double checked!

2.    Check the Closet. Before you go out and begin shopping for new special occasion clothing, check your child’s closet first. You may find that you already have the perfect outfit there (and that it still fits!). You may also find a bargain purchase you made last year in anticipation for this year that you had forgotten about. Therefore, always check the closet first.

3.    Make a List. Finally, make a list of the special occasion items you will need. For example, if you already have a nice dress shirt, socks and dress shoes that fit your son, then you may only need to find a pair of slacks and a dress belt to complete the outfit. Making a list in advance will save you money if you stick to it when you’re shopping.
