When Should Tuxedos with Tails Be Worn

Just as women have difficulty determining when it’s appropriate to wear full-length dresses and when they can get by wearing short or tea-length dresses, men often struggle with determining what types of events require a regular tuxedo versus a tuxedo featuring a tail. Just as it is for women, this fashion question ultimately depends on the event you are attending.

While it may seem appropriate to wear a formal tuxedo with a tail to any formal event, this is not the case. If you do, you will most likely feel a little out of place and over-dressed. This is even true if you are attending a black tie event. While black tie events are more formal than the normal business meeting, wedding or church service, they do not require a tuxedo with a tail. They simply require that you wear a tuxedo, pressed white shirt, cummerbund and a black tie (doesn’t matter if it’s a regular tie or a bow tie).

The events that merit tuxedos with tails to be worn are those that claim to be “white tie” events. These events are super formal events that surpass the black tie event. And, you will be notified in some way regarding the required attire when you are invited to one of these events. When dressing for a white tie event you will wear a tailed tuxedo with a white collared dress shirt, white bow tie, cummerbund, shiny dress shoes and possibly even white formal gloves.

Again, don’t worry too much about white tie events and those requiring tuxedos with tails, when this type of tuxedo is required, you will be told before the event.
