Educational Summer Activities for Kids

Just because summer has arrived doesn’t mean we should just let our kids lounge around the house and forget everything they learned about in school. The summer months are actually the perfect months to help increase our kids’ knowledge about various things, if we take the time to do it. So, what are some educational activities for kids that you can help them with?
• Gardening – Believe it or not, a lot of kids don’t ever make the connection between growing food and the grocery store. This is especially for those kids who haven’t ever been subjected to a rural lifestyle. So, why not help your kids get a better understanding of where the foods they eat come from? Take your kids to the local home and garden store and pick out some vegetable seeds (tomatoes, legumes, carrots, etc.), purchase the necessary supplies and start a small garden at home.
• Sewing – Like food, a lot of children don’t give a second thought as to where their clothing comes from or how it’s made. All they see are the fancy dresses, stylish suits and name-brand clothing hanging on the racks at their local department stores ready for purchase. They have no idea how many hours go into making each piece of clothing. Therefore, if you sew, why not teach your kids more about how clothes are made? Help them pick out a simple pattern for a shirt, skirt or pair of shorts and then take them to choose the material and finish the project by helping them sew it together!
• Animal Life – Aside from the traditional house pets (cats, dogs, fish and birds) most kids don’t have a good idea about how animals live in the wild. To help increase your kids’ knowledge about how various animals live in their natural habitats, you can take your kids to a nearby zoo where they can learn more about the animals there. You can also rent a number of educational videos showing animals in their natural habitats for your children to watch on those “lazy” summer days.
Above are just three examples of different educational activities you can do with your kids during the summer. There are many more options out there. For example, cooking helps with mathematics (measuring various ingredients), hiking can be used to teach about how our bodies’ muscles work together as well as nature and camping teaches us how to survive with minimal tools. Use your imagination and you’ll be surprised at how many educational opportunities there are for your kids this summer through many of the summer activities your family enjoys!
